The most-downloaded mods on Modrinth, explained: where each one goes (server, players or both) and which loader and Minecraft version it works with.

Out of these 150 popular mods:

  • 62 go on the server and on players' games.
  • 12 run on the server only: your friends don't install a thing.
  • 76 are client-only (graphics, UI or FPS). They don't run on the server, but you can include them in your friends' modpack.

By loader, 143 have a version for Fabric, 117 have a version for Forge and 122 have a version for NeoForge. You pick each world's version and loader, and the catalog only shows you the mods that work there.
